. . . .Devon said excitedly, "Let's go to the store now to get a dog." Mom laughed and replied, "Not from a store, Honey. There are many good places to look for dogs a reputable breeder, a person who is breeding his own dog, or even the SPCA."
Devon asked, with a puzzled look on her face, "What is the SPCA?"
Mom replied, "SPCA stands for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Almost every town has an animal shelter such as the SPCA, although they may have a different name. They gather up lost dogs and try to find their owners, and they try to find good homes for the ones that are never claimed or wanted."
John frowned and asked, "Why wouldn't people want their pets?"
"Probably because they picked the wrong dog to begin with a dog unsuitable for the family," Mom replied.
"Why would they do that?" asked Devon.
Mom said, "They surely wouldn't do it on purpose. They just didn't know what to look for when they were first buying a dog. Dogs show their personalities right from the beginning.
"For example, if the first thing a prospective puppy does is bite your hand, it may be saying 'Don't pick me.' Take the hint.". . . .
